At 6:30 p.m. on June 13, the 18th China-UK Intellectual Property Salon was held in the Peace Palace of Novotel Peace Hotel in Beijing. The theme of this salon was “Copyright Protection and the Extension of the Life of the Creative Industry.” A number of intellectual property professionals, including experts from SSIP, were invited to participate in this salon to discuss many IP topics, such as the differences between Chinese and English copyright systems, music copyright, copyright administrative protection, etc.

The moderator of the salon, Mr. Tom Duke, Senior Intellectual Property Liaison Office of the British Embassy in Beijing, first warmly welcomed the participants. After that, Associate Professor Zhang Fengyan from the Music and Recording Arts College of Communication University of China, Ros Lynch, Director of the Copyright and Law Enforcement Department of UKIPO, and Jo Lusby, independent consultant of the creative industry and former Managing Director of Penguin Langdon North Asia Publishing House, shared their thoughts on the topic of “Copyright Protection and the Extension of the Life of Creative Industry.”

Associate Professor Zhang Fengyan briefly introduced the latest development of China’s music copyright industry, including its business model and consumption model. She said that although China’s music industry is in the early stages of development and the order is somewhat chaotic, with the enhancement of China’s overall national strength and the continuous improvement of the quality of the people, more and more young people are beginning to have a sense of respect for intellectual property rights and are willing to pay for music they consume. China's music industry, especially the digital music industry, occupies a leading position in the world, which has become a unique development mode for China’s music industry. Many music network platforms in China are not only a platform for distribution, but also participate in investing in the music industry. The profits of the platforms also come from advertising.

Ms. Jo Lusby believed that China’s music market is large and important, but China’s piracy supervision needs to be strengthened. China’s current music business model is mainly supported by investment and advertising, which is not a healthy and sustainable business model. Moreover, the lack of a legal and commercial framework for the protection of rights results in great obstacles for China to exchange copyright with foreign countries. Therefore, China’s music industry should protect its own innovation achievements from the perspective of commercial interests and consumers, and let copyright become the guarantee and support for the healthy development of the industry.

Ms. Ros Lynch brief introduced the current situation of the legislation and enforcement of IP administrative protection in the UK, especially the Music Copyright Collective Management Organization of UK.This organization has been recognized by the European Union and other domestic laws and regulations, including the Collective Management Order, and has obtained an authoritative legal status. The organization mainly engaged in the management and protection of music copyright and other related work. After more than 100 years of development, the organization has gradually become a commercial organization that can provide copyright protection and economic benefits to its members.
