On January 9, 2015, the second round of “Dialogue between China and U.S. IP Scholars 2014,” co-hosted by Renmin University of China Academy of IP and American Chamber of Commerce, organized by Beijing Sunshine Intellectual Property and Legal Development (SSIP), was held in Sanya, Hainan Province. IP scholars from China and U.S. exchanged views and thoughts on issues in China’s IP system and practice that influence the two countries and the development of IP in the globe. The dialogue is indeed a fruitful event.
Professor Liu Chuntian, President of the China Intellectual Property Law Association and Dean of the Academy of IP, Renmin University of China, and Davi Kappos, the former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce and Commissioner of the USPTO, co-chaired the dialogue. A number of Chinese experts participated in the dialogue, including Yin Xintian, former director of the Department of Treaty and Law of the State Intellectual Property Office, Chen Yongshun, director of the Beijing Intellectual Property Institute and former Vice Chief Judge of the Intellectual Property Tribunal of the Beijing Higher People's Court, Ma Yi, Director of the Zhongguancun Intellectual Property Strategy Research Institute, and Lichen, Professor of Renmin University of China School of Law and Academy of IP. Experts from the US included Randall Rader, former Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and Mark Cohen, Senior Advisor to the USPTO, Tony Chen, partner of Jones Day, and Eric Priest, professor of the University of Oregon.
According to the agreement between the organizers, the "Dialogue between China and U.S. IP Scholars" was started in 2013, and will be held twice one year, hosted by China and U.S. in turn. The Dialogues were held in January 2013 in Beijing and in May 2013 in Washintong, D.C. The organizers published the Dialogue between China and U.S. IP Scholars 2013 in May 2014. The first round of the dialogue of 2014 was held in Washington. D.C. in September last year. And the Dialogue between China and U.S. IP Scholars 2014 will be published this April. The dialogue has become a new channel, new platform and new mechanism for China-U.S. communication and cooperation in the area of IP, and brings positive energy to the new relationship between China and the United States.
