In the morning of September 20, 2019, the Seminar on Judicial Protection for the Copyright of Online Musical Works was held in Guangzhou Court of the Internet. The seminar was moderated by Judge Hou Xianglei, the Vice Chief Judge of the Court. And A Proposal to Jointly Construct a Three-Tier Right Protection Mechanism for Online Copyright Cases (hereafter "the Proposal") was also released on the seminar.
At the seminar, Zhang Chunhe, Chief Judge of Guangzhou Court of the Internet, first extended a warm welcome to the participants. And then he shared Guangzhou Court of the Internet’s idea and concept on the trial of copyright issues. Following Zhang’s keynote speech, experts and scholars had a heated discussion on the problems regarding the use of musical works online and the practice of judicial protection for these works. They share their idea on the value of the musical work and NPE copyright litigation, etc., from the perspectives of copyright holders, platforms and NPEs.
In the end, Guangzhou Court of the Internet, 15 music copyright holders and online music platform jointly signed the Proposal to establish a mechanism that will protect intellectual products in the online cultural industry. The mechanism is also a multi-channel mechanism for dispute resolution, which is more feasible for the protection of musical works online.
