On September 14, 2020, the EU and China signed a bilateral agreement to protect 100 European Geographical Indication (GI) Products in China and 100 Chinese CI products in the EU to prevent tampering and imitation of GIs. The agreement will come into effect in early 2021.

This cooperation between China and the EU started in 2006 and potected 10 GIs of both parties in 2012. The initial agreement is the basis of the current cooperation. Within four years after the “China-EU Agreement on Gis” comes into effect, the scope of the agreement will be expanded to cover another 175 GIs of both parties. These GIs must follow the same approval process (i.e. evaluation and solicitation of comments) as the 100 names already covered by the agreement.

The Chinese market has high growth potential for European food and beverages. In 2019, China was the third largest destination of EU agricultural exports, with a trade volume of 14.5 billion euros. China is alos the second largest destination for EU exports of GI products, accounting for 9% of the total value, including wine, agricultural products and spirits. In addition, thanks to the Agreement, European consumers will also be able to discover Chinese specialty products.

The signing of the China-EU GIs Agreement indicates that China-EU economic and trade relations will continue to advance on the road of deepening cooperation and mutual benefit.

To this end, the EU Delegation to China is scheduled to hold a China-EU GIs Seminar at the Kempinski Hotel in Beijing on November 17, 2020.
