Collaboration between the SSIP and the Law Society of the UK
Recently, Beijing Sunshine Intellectual Property and Legal Development Foundation has established a friendly cooperative relationship with the Law Society of the UK. In the future, Chinese companies interested in investing in the UK or conducting transactions with British companies, if they need to inquire about the local laws of England and Wales, or encounter intellectual property disputes in the local area, they can contact the Law Society for help and guidance through the SSIP.
Lawyers in the UK are divided into two categories: barrister and solicitor, each with different requirements and division of labor. Barrister represents certain types of cases and higher-ranking court hearings. Solicitor's job is to provide legal services to clients. They work in the office and generally do not appear in court to represent cases. Barrister generally cannot accept the client's entrustment directly, but can only accept the client’s entrustment through a solicitor. If a client need a barrister to appear in court, he/she must reach a solicitor first.
The Law Society is an independent professional body established for solicitors. It employs more than 400 people in all regions of England and Wales. It is the spokesperson for solicitors in England and Wales, leading the professional development of solicitors, and committed to maintaining the rule of law.
In terms of Sino-British cooperation, in addition to assisting Chinese companies to inquire about local laws, the Law Society also organizes a series of activities to build a bridge between Chinese companies and local British lawyers, and provides assistance to Chinese lawyers who are interested in seeking professional development in the UK. .
Affected by the pandemic, the recent activities of the Law Society mainly focus on online meetings, covering capacity building, women’s equal rights, and a society under the rule of law.
The SSIP intends to jointly launch online activities with the Intellectual Property Committee of the Law Society within this year, so stay tuned.
